A three-part exhibition celebrating the changes in and around Granton over the years is set to capture the imagination of the Edinburgh public.
The exhibition, collated by Upper Strand Development Ltd, is entitled Granton Old and New and was recently unveiled at a special ceremony at Granton Lighthouse by Councillor Elizabeth Maginnis, before moving to the company's Research and Development Marketing Centre at Upper Strand, Waterfront Avenue.
The company has worked closely with various organisations and people over the past year to source material for the project, including local historian group, the Pilton Elderly Project, and James Gracie, writer of the book about the area, Stranger on the Shore.
Councillor Elizabeth Maginnis, said: "It was an honour to unveil this exhibition. With all the major developments taking place in the area just now, it is nice to see that the old Granton many people love and remember, with its wealth of history and character, has not being forgotten about."
Part one of the exhibition focuses on Granton's history, dating back 500 years, the people who lived in the area and local industries, including the Gas Works, shipbuilding at Granton Harbour and fishing at the Sea Quarry.
Part two showcases the major transformations taking place at the Upper Strand Development, which is a joint venture between The Burrell Company and Places for People Group, and one of the key organisations involved in the regeneration of the area which is breathing new life into the area through residential, commercial and social development.
The finale will focus on the larger Waterfront Edinburgh Ltd regeneration programme, which includes major development plans for the area up until 2015.
Andrew Burrell, Managing Director of The Burrell Company, said: "A lot of work has gone into this exhibition by all parties involved. I think there is something of interest for everyone, whether it is a trip down memory lane or a look at the exciting plans which are set to dramatically revitalise this traditionally industrial part of Edinburgh into a vibrant community."
Colin Rae, Development Director in Scotland for The Places for People Group, added: "This is an area with an interesting, colourful past and exciting future. Every stage of the exhibition has a great story to tell, which is why we are expecting it to be a huge hit among locals and visitors alike."
