The rejuvenation of the historic Bells Mills site near Edinburgh's picturesque Dean
Village is set to begin after Bells Mills Ltd, a joint venture between The Burrell Company and The EDI Group, and Glasgow based housebuilders, Bishop Loch, appointed Carillon plc contractors for the first phase of the development.
Situated on the Water of Leith, the residential development is set to transform the site which has lain derelict since it was destroyed by an explosion in the 1970s. The properties will be located within the Dean Conservation Area that forms part of the Edinburgh World Heritage site.
Carillion plc, which recently acquired Mowlem plc, is one of the UK's leading infrastructure, building and business services companies which is committed to designing, constructing and maintaining new environments for business, leisure and living.

Due to its status as a World Heritage Site, it was important to bring a contractor on board who understands the sensitivities involved and can construct properties to the highest standard.

Under the plans, 24 new apartments will be built in three blocks overlooking the Water of Leith. The remains of a classically designed rubble-walled granary of the early 1800s, which formed part of the mill complex - will be preserved and form an integral and important feature of the development.

The site is located between the Menzies Belford Hotel and the Edinburgh Sports Club with access to the Water of Leith Walkway. Work is due to begin soon and it is anticipated properties will be released for sale in 2008
