The Cowgate Under-5s Centre, which was created by BUREDI, a joint venture between The Burrell Company and The EDI Group, clinched the prestigious national Silver Award for being environmentally aware and has marked the occasion by building a fantastic eight foot-high tree house for its youngsters.
The purpose-built nursery, is located just off The Royal Mile and forms part of the Tron Development, a £15million regeneration programme in Edinburgh's Old Town.
Success followed when Allan Murray Architects came up with competition winning design for a modern building that would blend into the fabric of Edinburgh‚s traditional style. Since opening last year it has been nominated for several awards in recognition of its stylish features and the novel concept of housing such a nursery in the heart of the Old Town.
Lynn McNair, Head of Centres for the nursery recently visited Iceland in a bid to bring back some of their conservation techniques to provide an environmentally friendly space for youngsters to enjoy. This resulted in the creation of the tree house and Lynn will also now be able to harvest vegetables from the garden.
Lynn said: "The centre is a beautifully designed environment and has been described as an oasis of calm in the centre of a very beautiful busy city.
"Our reputation has gone from strength to strength as the nursery continues to be a high quality environment for children, their families and our staff, who love the natural daylight and shape of the space. We are looking forward to spending many happy hours throughout the seasons, reading to the children in the tree house."
Andrew Burrell, Managing Director of The Burrell Company, said: "We are delighted that the nursery is doing so well after its first year and are focussing on providing an eco-friendly service.
Ian Wall, Chief Executive of The EDI Group Ltd, said: "We were faced with the challenge of designing a visually interesting nursery whilst complementing the established style of traditional old town buildings. We have successfully done this and now it's great to see the nursery continuing to develop this theme."
