The ambitious Upper Strand development on Edinburgh's Granton waterfront scooped two coveted awards at the tenth annual Scottish Design Awards (Friday 18 May) - for best regeneration and best residential project.
The awards ceremony, which was presented by comedian Andrew Maxwell at the Crown Plaza in Glasgow, recognises excellence in all aspects of design in Scotland including architecture and interior design. Winning architects for the project were Reiach and Hall and Elder & Cannon.
The Upper Strand Development is part of a major £70m regeneration programme by property developers The Burrell Company and regeneration agency Places for People. Five phases are planned in total, providing up to 500 modern homes as well as live/work spaces and commercial units.
Added to the recent award wins including Best Housing Project at the National Home Builder Design Awards and Proposed Place Making Winner at Scottish Design Awards 2005; Upper Strand is fast becoming one of Edinburgh's most impressive residential developments.
Andrew Burrell, Managing Director of The Burrell Company said: "This is great news for everyone involved, and in particular, architect firms Elder and Cannon, and Reiach and Hall.
"We saw the amazing potential in this project from the outset and these awards help recognise the hard work involved and success achieved in helping regenerate Edinburgh's Waterfront."
Colin Rae, Development Director in Scotland for Places for People, added: "I am delighted that Upper Strand has once again achieved a high profile design award.
"Edinburgh's Waterfront has a new lease of life, a place where people want to work and live and Upper Strand development has contributed greatly to this. We've generated a building offering an array of affordable housing with unique style in what is now a fabulous location."
Upper Strand is a five year project providing residential and commercial units nestled among tree-lined boulevards, walkways and cycle paths leading to an array of sculptures and water features.
Part of the larger Waterfront Edinburgh Ltd regeneration programme, the scheme will cover nearly 350 acres of land and create a total of 8,500 homes and 14,000 jobs, as well as schools, leisure facilities and parkland - helping the area on its way to being among the most attractive places to live in Edinburgh.
Prices at Upper Strand range from £187,500 for two bedroom properties, £475,000 for penthouses and £215,000 for three bedroom properties. Two out of three live/work townhouses remain for sale at £200,000 and £220,000.
